Katia, August 2003
HOW THE KATIA SOLOMON FOUNDATION BEGAN
Katia Solomon is now a 10 year old girl from Tampa, Florida. In 2002, Katia was diagnosed with leukemia AML at the age of 2 ½. She and her family faced many sudden changes in their lives and a lot of uncertainties. Katia underwent 5 months of intense chemo treatments, spending nearly 90% of this time in the hospital. Katia reached remission and was considered cancer-free!
In August 2003, the cancer returned. It returned so aggressively that it was all over Katia’s body, in her blood, marrow, and brain. The only way to possibly save Katia’s life was to undergo chemotherapy, radiation and then a bone marrow transplant. However, Katia did not have a bone marrow match. None of her family matched. The search began. The Tampa Bay area, as well as many other areas nationwide, rallied with Florida Blood Services and the National Marrow Donor Program to find Katia a match. This was achieved in December 2003.
It was at that time, Katia’s family realized how much of a need there was for an organization to be able to help inform the public of not only the need but the “know how” on becoming a registered marrow donor. Just a small vial of blood and some paperwork could put a person on the registry, therefore bettering the chance of the thousands of people looking for marrow matches.
Little Katia Solomon has become a symbol of hope to so many who have followed her story. We find it only fitting to honor her brave fight by reaching out to others and, "Sharing hope on the wings of a Ladybug".
It is this Foundation’s goal to provide education and raise awareness to help in the fight against leukemia, lymphoma and other life threatening blood related diseases, to raise funds providing relief for families affected by these tragedies, and it contributed to the National Marrow Donor Program in the continued effort to expand the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.
